Bears to hire Cannon Matthews as nickel cornerbacks coach - Yahoo Sports

Jul 02, 2025

The Chicago Bears are continuing to fill out their coaching staff under Ben Johnson and are bringing in a veteran coach to work with their defensive backs. According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the Bears are hiring Cannon Matthews as their nickel cornerbacks coach and defensive assistant.

Matthews has been coaching in the NFL since 2007, when he broke in as an assistant. He became a defensive quality control coach with the Tennessee Titans in 2014 and spent time with the Washington Redskins before joining the Dallas Cowboys in 2020. After three seasons, Matthews was promoted to assistant defensive backs coach in 2023 and then safeties coach in 2024.

In Chicago, Matthews will work with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and secondaries coach Al Harris, whom he was with in Dallas. Matthews will be charged with helping develop nickel cornerbacks such as Kyler Gordon and Josh Blackwell. Gordon, who is entering his fourth season with the Bears, has earned praise from Johnson and Allen following a solid 2024 campaign.
